The pieces are created with tabs, slots, and extra material that you can see sticking up. A hammer and a block are used to get the tab into the slot along the length of the joint. The wooden mallet is used to create tacks along the length. Finally, an air hammer is used to complete the joint, bringing the extra material down to enclose the seam.
